Health & Safety

BCG is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace to ensure that our employees and others are not injured. Our goal is to eliminate all injuries, accidents and incidents.

To achieve this goal we will make safety a priority on all of our sites and jobs and we will require active participation by everyone in our business to adequately plan the work we are carrying out and to act safely at all times.

We will:

  1. Plan ahead to systematically identify and control all hazards in our workplace and to ensure our employees have the right plant and skills needed to work safely and control these hazards.

  2. Involve our employees in safety activities.

  3. Induct and train our employees to recognise and control hazards and hold regular safety meetings.

  4. Monitor our workplace to ensure our planned controls are effective.

  5. Train and supervise our employees to ensure they are acting safely.

  6. Record all incidents and accidents in our workplace, investigate all known incidents and accidents and take action to prevent recurrence.

  7. Develop and implement emergency and evacuation procedures.

  8. Ensure all plant and equipment is maintained and safe to use.

  9. Ensure our employees are provided with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  10. Ensure employees, contractors, and subcontractors understand and play their part to ensure their own safety and well-being at work.

We will uphold the Site Safe Site Safety Card (or equivalent) as a minimum training standard for our employees and subcontractors and we will ensure that our regular planned inspections will include monitoring of current cards in workplaces we control.

It is our policy to take all practicable steps to comply with the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and all Codes of Practice and Guidelines applying to our business.

Hazard Management

BCG will systematically identify all hazards in our workplace by maintaining a Hazard Register and where required, by completing a Task Analysis/Safe Work Method Statement for the jobs we undertake using the form contained in this Safety Plan. We will use employee knowledge and experience, the Construction Hazards and Construction Controls information in this Safety Plan along with other available information from Site Safe, ACC, Worksafe and other sources to ensure our a Task Analysis/Safe Work Method Statement has identified all relevant significant hazards and controls required to achieve our goal of zero injuries, incidents and accidents.

BCG  will maintain a list of our hazardous substances and/or products and will obtain Safety Data Sheets for them. All employees will have immediate access to SDS when working with these chemicals.

Our Hazard Register completed a Task Analysis/Safe Work Method Statement will be used for new employee inductions, employee training, toolbox safety meetings and workplace inspections.

Employee Participation

BCG will provide reasonable opportunities for our employees and contractors to participate effectively in ongoing processes for improvement in health and safety. This includes involving them in Hazard Reporting, the Task Analysis/Safe Work Method Statement process, a Training Needs Assessment, Safety Meetings and Accident Investigations. Hazards reported by employees and ways of controlling them will be entered into the Hazard Register. Task Analyses will be updated regularly to reflect all newly reported hazards and work tasks.

Employee and Contractor Induction and Training

BCG will induct all new employees and contractors to the significant hazards they will likely encounter working on our sites and/or jobs. We will use an Induction Checklist to record our employee and contractor inductions. To ensure consistency in our induction process, we will review the items in this Checklist, our completed Task Analysis/Safe Work Method Statement and other available information.

All employees and contractors will undertake Site Safe Passport or equivalent induction training every two years so that they receive an ongoing common and basic understanding of construction safety so that they are prepared to actively participate in our own safety activities.

Appropriate training for employees and managing of contractors will ensure that all work is carried out safely. We will identify the specific types of training each employee requires based on his or her responsibilities; we will arrange training to ensure they are able to act safely carrying out these responsibilities. We will expect our contractors to be trained and competent and if necessary, be able to provide evidence of that competency. We will use Task Analysis/SWMS to ensure we cover the relevant hazards and controls for each employee and contractor. We will maintain a record of all training activities using the Training Plan included within this Safety Plan.

BCG will hold regular safety meetings where onsite hazards and required controls will be discussed. Employees (and contractors if appropriate) will be involved in these meetings and asked for their input about the hazards and controls needed to do their jobs safely. Task Analysis/SWMS may be developed and discussed during the Safety Meetings. Safety meetings will be recorded in the Safety Meeting Minutes Form

Monitoring and Supervision

BCG will monitor our workplace to ensure that our planned controls are implemented and are effective in eliminating, isolating, or minimising hazards. We will supervise employees and contractors on site to ensure they understand our required controls and the consequences of not implementing them – including being injured or killed. We will recognise safe employee/contractor actions to support their efforts and we will coach employees/contractors who we observe acting unsafely.

Where supervisors and workers identify new hazards, or where they see that their planned controls do not effectively eliminate or minimise hazards, these hazards will be entered onto the Hazard Register. New and effective ways of dealing with these hazards will be developed. Both the Task Analysis/SWMS will be updated regularly to reflect all new control measures.

Incident Reporting and Investigating

BCG will encourage our employees to report all incidents and accidents. We will not blame employees for reporting or having incidents, but will look at our company’s own policies and procedures that may have lead to them. We will investigate all reported incidents and accidents to determine the contributing and root causes and we will take immediate corrective action to eliminate those causes.

BCG will use the Incident and Accident Register included in this Safety Plan to record all reported incidents and accidents. We will use the Incident and Accident Investigation Report included with this Safety Plan to ensure the causes and required corrective actions are known and are implemented.

In the event of a Notifiable Event, we will take all necessary steps to prevent further injury and we will secure the site to ensure it is not disturbed. We will immediately notify Worksafe by ringing the number posted on the Emergency Plan.

Any Worksafe notices placed on work activities on any site under our control will be complied with.

Emergency Planning

For each of our sites or projects, we will develop relevant emergency information included with this Safety Plan.

BCG will fill-in and post where it is accessible to all employees. We will train our employees working on each site in their responsibilities under the Emergency Plan. Our employees will have access to a site telephone or mobile phone, stocked first aid kit, a fire extinguisher and an emergency horn at all times they are working on-site.

Where the safety of any work practice or procedure under our control is unclear, all work will cease until such time as a Task Analysis is developed identifying effective controls to eliminate, isolate or minimise the hazard concerned, and these controls are implemented.

All visitors to sites under our control will be supervised at all times, inducted to the site specific hazards, site rules, Emergency Plan and will wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Inductions will be recorded and maintained in the Induction/Visitor Register.

Plant and Equipment

BCG will provide our employees with plant and equipment that is safe for its intended use and that is maintained in safe condition. We will provide personal protective clothing and equipment required to minimise hazards to our employees. We will ensure the use of this equipment by our employees.
